Iksan Jewelry Museum & Dinosaur Theme Park with Kids — Chuseok Folk Games, a Hangeul Jewelry Exhibition, and an Outdoor Dino Playground That Filled the Day

Our day out in Iksan with the kids 🦕

At the tail end of the Chuseok holiday
(Korea’s harvest festival),
we took the kids
to the Jewelry Museum in Iksan.

Then we spent the whole afternoon
at the outdoor playground
of the Dinosaur Theme Park next door.

To cut to the chase:
even though we couldn’t use
the indoor play facilities,

the outdoor playground alone
was enough for a full day!

Out front, a fountain
was shooting up, nice and cool.

🎯 Folk games for Chuseok

As luck would have it,
the museum was running
traditional folk game activities
for Chuseok.

Under the eaves
there were spots set up
for tuho (pitch-pot)
and ddakji (paper-tile flipping),
and our kid had a go
at throwing the tuho arrows.

According to the museum,
the event ran
from September 24 to 27.

🔤 Hangeul turned into jewels

In the special exhibition gallery
there was an invited exhibition called
’Hangeul Becomes Design’
(한글, 디자인이 되다).

It’s jewelry made
in the very shapes of Hangeul,
the Korean alphabet.

Letter strokes become brooches,
and colorful Hangeul pieces
dangle from necklaces.

The work cards
had titles like
’Hangeul, Blooming’
(silver, cubic zirconia)
and artist Kim Kyung-mi’s
’Movement of the Stroke (획 劃)‘
(gold, gemstones).

This invited exhibition ran
from September 16 to October 5,
so it has ended now.

In the plaza in front of the museum
stands a sculpture of a giant ring
with jewels hanging from it.
Just the thing for a jewelry museum.

🦖 The Dinosaur Theme Park next door

Right next to the Jewelry Museum
is the Dinosaur Theme Park,
home to Dino Kids World.

Unfortunately,
we didn’t get to use
the indoor play facilities.

📍 Iksan Dinosaur Theme Park (익산 공룡테마공원) — open in Naver Map

There are dinosaurs
standing everywhere.

Trilobite fossils are carved
into the rock pillars,
and our kid even got to touch
a Tyrannosaurus tooth.

🛝 What the kids loved

✔ An enormous slide
(a ‘spiral slide’ sign

✔ A life-size Brachiosaurus
✔ Fossils buried in the ground
✔ Dinosaurs shown as skeletons
✔ Rope climbing woven like a spider web
✔ Zip lines here and there

There are information boards
next to the dinosaurs, too.

Maiasaura is thought to be
the first dinosaur
to truly raise its young,
so it was given a scientific name
meaning ‘good mother lizard’.

It was 9–10 m long,
2.5 m tall
and weighed 4 t, the board says.
